Mumbai rains take a backseat as soon as Southwest Monsoon ends. In fact, the city witnesses almost dry weather conditions throughout the period between November and until around the month of April.
However, in a turn of events, Mumbai rains made an unusual comeback during the month of December. In fact, heavy rainfall activity was witnessed during this period.
During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Colaba observatory witnessed a whopping 82 mm of rainfall while the Santa Cruz recorded a massive 54 mm as well. The last time the city received good rains was on October 17 to the tune of 32 mm.
All this was due to Cyclone Ockhi which had developed in the Bay of Bengal but moved towards Arabian Sea. The system had intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm.

However, that record is far gone and Cyclone Ockhi has caused Mumbai to set new benchmarks in terms of rain records. The city in two days has recorded 76 mm of rainfall which is the new all-time high for December.
Not only this, the 24-hour rainfall has also been broken with Santa Cruz recording a good 54 mm of rainfall. Thus, the past record which stands at a 31.4 mm during the year 1967 has been surpassed, all thanks to the currently fizzled out.
Now, rains will significantly have reduced over the city and now weather will once again become almost dry. However, the possibility of isolated rainfall today cannot be ruled out.
