During winter months of December and January, coldest place in the plains invariably  is found in Punjab, Haryana or Rajasthan. Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hisar, Karnal, Narnaul, Churu, Pilani and Sikar become the hot favorites and get rotated  for the top place. Yesterday, Churu in Rajasthan was the coldest by measuring 3.4°C and closely followed by Nowgong in East Madhya Pradesh at 4°C. Today, Nowgong becomes the coldest by registering a minimum of 4.5°C.

With the western disturbance arriving over Jammu & Kashmir and its induced circulation over Rajasthan, cold wave conditions have abated from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and most parts of Rajasthan. Ensuing change in the wind pattern by tomorrow will raise the minimum temperatures by 2-4 °C at many places. Punjab, Haryana , Rajasthan and Delhi is unlikely to figure in the coldest towns of north India.

The rain belt, in the coming days will also cover parts of  Madhya Pradesh with a lag of 48hr. Accordingly, the lowest temperatures are likely to continue over parts of Madhya Pradesh. However, following extension of rain over state of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, the coldest city in the plains may get shifted eastward over Chhattisgarh or Odisha. Northern parts of Maharashtra also stand favorite in the race and may get a freak chance of being the lowest.
