Palam witnessed the coldest day of the season on January 8, a day after Safdarjung recorded the season’s lowest maximum of 13.1°C. The year started on a good note for Palam but maximums started dropping after January 6, when it recorded 16.2°C. On the next day, maximum in Palam settled at 13°C.
Cold day conditions are mostly associated with dense fog, heavy clouding and incessant rains. This time it is persistent fog that has been causing cold day conditions across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
Cold day conditions are observed when maximum temperature is 16°C or below and at least 5 degrees less than normal average. Such weather conditions are nothing unusual for Palam in the month of January. The lowest day temperature in the recent past was 9.7°C, recorded on January 2, 2013.
For next 2 days, thick fog will be confined to only pockets of North India. But parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh could experience dense fog. Cold day conditions will prevail across most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
In absence of significant clouding and widespread dense fog, day temperatures will not drop further. Maximums could drop after the spell of light rain expected on January 13 and 14. Winds across the region will start blowing from the southeast direction January12 onwards.
