Most of Northern plains of India including states like parts of North Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are witnessing minimum temperatures in single digits. Many stations of East Madhya Pradesh & isolated places of North Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana have night temperatures between 4-6°C.
Reason for these single digit temperatures is clear sky conditions and dry & cold winds which are blowing from hilly regions of West Himalayas. This region recently witnessed scattered rainfall.
During clear sky the Outgoing Longwave Radiation increases leading to drop in temperatures. In the first half of December temperatures were slightly above normal due to moderate to dense fog layer. This fog cover was spreading across the Northern Plains.
Fog layer acts as a greenhouse cover and does not allow Earth’s energy to escape into the atmosphere leading to higher minimum temperature. But now we expect that sky will remain clear and dense fog will not make a comeback anytime soon. So we do not expect significant rise in minimum temperature therefore minimum temp will remain below normal.
