The northern hills of the country have remained free from rain and snow during the entire month of December. However, the fag end of the month brought a few occasional rain or snow. The reason for the absence of rain or snow in the hilly terrains of North India can be attributed to the not so strong Western Disturbances.
However, the arrival of January marked significant weather systems that looped in more rain and snow to show up in the northern hills of the country. Since January, one after another Western Disturbance has been approaching the Western Himalayas thereby resulting in rain or snowfall in the North Indian hills.
On and off rains and snow had enveloped almost the entire hills of North India. So much so that some of the favorite tourist spots like Srinagar, Manali, Nainital and Shimla were covered with a crisp white blanket of snow. Even the holy shrine of North India, Vaishno Devi, also observed a snow show.
Thereafter, as the Western Disturbance moved away, snow or rains took a break from pouring over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and weather became clear. However, now, again a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach the Western Himalayas on February 3.
Hence, after witnessing a few dry days, the hilly states of North India are once again expected to get covered under thick snow layer. Heavy to very heavy snow is expected to cover the hills, particularly the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on February 4 and February 5.
