The hills of North India are heading for an extensive rainy spell. A fresh Western Disturbance can be presently seen over North Pakistan and adjoining areas. It is slowly moving in the easterly direction, towards the western Himalayas.

Generally during this time of the year the Western Disturbances track to the higher reaches only. However, this time it will bring good rain and thundershowers over all the three hilly states namely, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The induced cyclonic circulation is also lying over Punjab and a trough can be seen extending from this system across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and up to West Bengal. This trough will be responsible for pre-Monsoon activities in terms of dust storm and thundershowers over the next couple of days in the northern plains as well.

The hills of North India are heading for an extensive spell of pre-Monsoon activities, commencing on May 12 and lasting at least for next 3 to 4 days. The higher reaches will remain vulnerable to snowfall. We cannot rule out hailstorm activities as well.

The hilly states are weather-sensitive regions owing to their mountainous terrain. Even short spell of heavy showers can lead to floods and landslides. Therefore, one needs to excise plenty of caution in the hilly states.
