Northeast Monsoon is around the corner and as per weathermen at Skymet Weather, it is likely to make onset anytime soon. Presently, scattered light rains are going on over Tamil Nadu, few areas of Interior Tamil Nadu has seen moderate showers in the past few days.

In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday, Palyankottai witnessed light rain to the tune of 3.2 mm and Salem also observed traces of rain. In the same span of time, Minambakkam and Nungambakkam Observatories of Chennai failed to witness any rainfall activity.
However, with the Northeast Monsoon inching closer to the region, rains will pick up pace across Tamil Nadu. Chennai is likely to witness light showers with one or two moderate spells during the next two to three days.
The rain intensity may increase around October 29 and few heavy spells are also expected by the end of October and first week of November. At present, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over Southwest Bay of Bengal, due to which scattered rains are going on over the state.
It has been observed that usually, Northeast Monsoon sets in over Chennai and South Peninsula around the third week of October, though there are instances when it has been delayed and has commenced in November.

In the year 1992 and 2000 Northeast monsoon made an onset on November 2. Northeast monsoon gives rain over Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The season lasts from October to December. During this time, Tamil Nadu recorded around 60 percent of its annual rainfall.
As per Skymet Weather, many models are indicating that this year Northeast Monsoon will not be vigorous and rains may be slightly less than normal. Usually, when La-Nina is evolving or is strong, Northeast Monsoon becomes slightly week. Presently, most of the international weather models are indicating that La-Nina will set in during winters.
