As reiterated by Skymet Meteorology Division in India the Northeast Monsoon has been weak in December so far leading to scanty rain in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. According to the data available with Skymet, Tamil Nadu has been deficit by 90%, while Kerala is deficit by 60% in the week ending December 10.
There are 34 districts in Tamil Nadu, out of which 27 have observed scanty rain, while 2 districts are deficit and 4 – Namakkal, Vellore, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri - have gone absolutely dry. Almost similar conditions prevail in Kerala where 4 districts are deficient and 8 are scanty. Fortunately there is one district, Kottayam that is in excess.
The situation in Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh isn’t any different either. All the four districts in Rayalaseema have gone scanty this week. Coastal Andhra Pradesh has observed rain in one of its districts (Nellore) due to which it just stopped short of being scanty. The sub-division is deficient with 59% shortfall, with 8 out of 9 districts experiencing scanty rain.
However, with some good amounts of rain in peninsular India in the last 2-3 days, the overall deficit in the sub-divisions may come down, but not to normal levels. The remaining one week of the Northeast Monsoon doesn’t look promising either.
