Period between October and December is considered as the Northeast Monsoon over Peninsular India. The region, particularly the eastern half inclusive of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, record their major rainfall during the season.
Tamil Nadu records around 48% of its annual rainfall, wherein coastal districts receive 60% where as interiors observed 40% to 50%.
The normal onset date of Northeast Monsoon over Tamil Nadu is around October 18. However, rains have been subdued over Tamil Nadu till now as Northeast Monsoon is yet not make an onset over the coastal state.
Though Tamil Nadu has been recording scattered showers during the last few days but that has been on account of a depression in Bay of Bengal. Now, as the system moves away from the Indian Coast towards Myanmar, these rains will decrease but few showers will continue for another 24 hours.
Meteorologists anticipate that Monsoon is likely to remain subdued over Tamil Nadu during October. However, weather conditions indicate that November will perform better, with intensity of rains picking up pace.
Rain activity will reduce again in the month of December. With this, Skymet Weather predicts that overall Northeast Monsoon is expected to remain between 90% and 95% of LPA (Long Period Average) ranging from October to November. November will be the rainiest month of the season.
