Northeast Monsoon 2016

Southwest Monsoon has already withdrawn from the entire country and Northeast Monsoon has commenced over the south peninsular India yesterday i.e. on October 30.

Although normal date of onset of Northeast Monsoon is Oct 20. However, this year, the onset has delayed by 10 days. Thus, it can be said that Northeast Monsoon has made a weak onset over South Peninsula as the intensity of rain is likely to remain subdued over Andhra Pradesh, interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. These are particularly the areas that receive most of the rains during Northeast Monsoon between the months of October and December.

Tamil Nadu has been receiving scattered showers since last 2 days. Although now it is foreseen that light to moderate showers with cloudy sky will continue over most parts of Tamil Nadu and isolated rains may also occur over interior parts of Karnataka as well.

In fact, coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu normally receive 60% of annual rainfall during Northeast Monsoon. On the contrary, interior districts of the state receive 40-50% of their annual rains during this time.

The onset of Northeast Monsoon is said to be marked by the settling of easterly and northeasterly winds over Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Earlier this period was referred to as post Monsoon season but nowadays, the phrase has been changed and is termed as Northeast Monsoon or retreating monsoon.
