Northeast Monsoon 2021 has finally come to an end with the last few days being a bang on affair for the southern parts of the country. So much so that Chennai saw flooding rains of over 200 mm, surpassing its monthly average in one go.
The month of December for South India was a lull one until mammoth rains that lashed many parts. In fact, some other parts of the regions that come under the Northeast Monsoon belt also saw good rains.
With this, Northeast Monsoon officially came to an end on a surplus note, with the seasonal figures standing at +55% for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh saw 5% surplus rains. Major surplus regions include Rayalaseema at a whopping 110%, Kerala at 106% and South Interior Karnataka being the most surplus at 145%.
Now, with the season coming to an end and no significant weather system in the Bay of Bengal, there are lean days ahead in terms of rains for South India. No major activity is likely to be seen and only light showers are expected in some areas with rains gradually taking a backseat.
