January 4, 2023 6:49 PM |

Northeast Monsoon rains consist of rains that occur between the months of October and December, also known as post Monsoon rains. As the two streams cannot be together, the Northeast Monsoon sets in only after Southwest Monsoon and at times there is a simultaneous occurrence wherein Southwest Monsoon withdraws and Northeast Monsoon immediately sets in, which was the case last year.

This time, the onset took place during the fag end of October. The rains are however counted right from the beginning of October. This time as the Monsoon withdrawal was late, October saw very good rainfall pan India and even over southern parts, thus ending at 47 percent surplus Pan India.

Kerala was at deficit in October but other parts were all under the normal rain category including Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka as well as Tamil Nadu. November saw poor rains over the entire country as well as over teh subdivisions of South India. While pan India saw -37 percent rains in November, largest defciiency was observed in Coastal Andhra Pradesh at -44 percent.

The month of December on the other hand fared pretty well, courtesy Circulations, easterly waves and even a storm. While it was at -14 percent countrywide, southern parts saw good rains with Coastal Andhra Pradesh recording +183 percent rains and Rayalaseema observing +238 percent rainfall. South Interior Karnataka was at +300 percent. All of these subdivisions saw very good rains and surplus rainfall.

Overall, Northeast Monsoon ended on a normal note and except for the month of November, good rains were seen over the southern parts.
