Northeast Monsoon: Chennai rains to intensify, moderate to heavy showers likely after 24 hrs

Northeast Monson 2017 has finally made onset over South Peninsula on October 27, although a delayed one. All thanks to the cyclonic circulation over Southeast Tamil Nadu, this made the weather conditions favorable for the arrival of the three-month-long season.

Tamil Nadu including Chennai records more than 60% of its annual rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon that spans from October to December. Though the season sets in sometime between the second and third week of October and this year, the onset has been delayed.

According to Skymet Weather, Chennai and nearby areas of the city will record light to moderate rains for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, with the cyclonic circulation getting more marked, rains will pick up pace across Coastal Tamil Nadu along with Chennai.

“We can expect some moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers to lash Chennai and other coastal parts of the state on Sunday,” said Mahesh Palawat, Vice President- Meteorology, Skymet Weather.

In fact, the approaching rainy spell will be a prolonged one, as weathermen predict mainly moderate rains with some heavy spells to continue over the region till November 2.
