The state of Kerala received the first bout of northeast monsoon showers in the past 24 hours. The southern parts received a bigger share than the rest. More rains are likely till 08th November and short break thereafter. The onset of Northeast Monsoon on 28th October did not auger well in the opening week and the first three days of November observed weak monsoon activity. Decent showers have lashed the state in the past 24 hours and Coonoor, Kochi, and Thrissur received heavy rains during the night.

October is the rainiest month of Northeast Monsoon for the state with 303.4mm of rainfall, followed by November a distant second with mere 153.4mm. The opening month of October was deficit with -27% and the shortfall increased to 32% due to poor rains even thereafter. However, the current spell between 05th and 08th November is likely to cause satisfactory rainfall which could be heavier at places in the southern parts of the state. Alappuzha, Punalur, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Thrissur, Coonoor, and Kottayam can expect moderate to heavy rains accompanied with lightning and thunderstorm.

A cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and a trough extending northward off Kerala and Karnataka coast will usher this weather activity over the next 4 days. This may as well reduce the large seasonal deficiency and also bring pleasant weather conditions.
