Northeast Monsoon 2018: Rain in Tamil Nadu revives, heavy rains in offing

After much delayed onset of Northeast Monsoon, rain in Tamil Nadu has also revived, particularly during the last 24 hours. Right from Chennai in north to Pamban and Kanyakumari in south, all stations have recorded good rainfall.

According to Skymet Weather, November began with fairly widespread moderate rains at most parts of the state, with few heavy spells as well. In fact, rains covered interior parts of the state also.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Cuddalore 84.6 mm, Chennai 36.1 mm, Pamban 32.4 mm, Karaikal 30.2 mm, Nagapattinam 25.0 mm, Valparai 24.0 mm, Coimbatore 23.0 mm, Parangipettai 14.0 mm, Puducherry 7.8 mm, Madurai 7.0 mm, Coonoor 5.8 mm, Thoothukudi 5.4 mm, Adiramapatnam 4.3 mm, Ooty 3.6 mm, and Karurparamathi 2.2 mm.

At present, a cyclonic circulation is marked over southwest Bay of Bengal. A trough is also extending from this system up to North Bay of Bengal along the East Coast. Another trough is seen running up to Lakshadweep Islands across Tamil Nadu.

With this, second consecutive day of widespread rainfall is on cards, with some heavy spells. Thereafter, rain activity would continue but on reducing note.

Chennai also stands bright chances of light to moderate rains with few heavy spells in the coming days.

As per weathermen, Bay of Bengal is quite promising at present. In fact, Tamil Nadu is likely to record fair amount of rains during the next 10 days on account of successive weather systems churning out from active Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

Weather models are indicating towards series of weather systems coming up in quick succession during the next few days. And, all of them are would be moving in westerly direction towards Tamil Nadu coast.
