The northeast monsoon is not yet half-way mark, still Tamil Nadu has received 45% excess of the normal rainfall. It has received 244.3 mm of rain during October as against the monthly normal of 170.5 mm. The same state witnessed a 29% deficient rainfall for an entire Northeast monsoon season (1st October – 31st December) last year.
Out of 34 districts, 25 districts in Tamil Nadu have received substantially good rain in the last month. While Tirunelveli received the highest rainfall that was 166% of monthly rainfall (383.2 mm as against 144.2 mm of normal monthly), Dindigul, Nagapattinam, Tiruppur and Toothukudi received rainfall that was double or more than double the monthly normal rainfall.
Kerala came on second spot
Following Tamil Nadu was Kerala that received excess rain of 24% of the monthly normal. Out of 14 districts, 8 received excess rainfall while 6 managed to garner normal rainfall for the month.
Kottayam received the highest rain out of all districts that was 454.3 mm as against monthly normal of 298 mm. Kottayam received 52% of the monthly normal and Ernakulam followed with excess rainfall of 48% during the month.
Hdhud’s contribution to Andhra Pradesh’s monthly rainfall
Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana received more than 50% of their October month Northeast Monsoon quota in the last week of the month thanks to cyclone Hudhud, which helped in bringing the rain deficiency down to 25% for the state.
Since Cyclone Hudhud lashed Visakhapatnam with heavy rains, the city’s monthly rainfall was 66% excess as against the monthly rainfall of 199.7 mm.
Bangalore received excess rainfall
Even though the rainfall was 4% less than the monthly normal for Karnataka, Bangalore received excess rain of 63% in October. It received the highest rainfall followed by Chitradurga and Davangere in the South Interior Karnataka sub division.
