Pre monsoon rains this year have been very good for many states of Northeast India. Meghalaya is large excess with a surplus of 99%, followed by Assam which is surplus by 59%, Sikkim is also surplus by 51%. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur are in normal rain category. Arunachal Pradesh is surplus by 4%, Manipur by 1%.
However, Nagaland is deficient by 7%. Mizoram is the only state in Northeast India that is in large deficient category with a deficiency of 66%, Tripura is also in the deficient category with a deficiency of 58%.
Therefore, we can say that northern parts of Northeast India have received decent rainfall in comparison to southern states. Reason for this surplus rainfall can be attributed to the remnants of Western Disturbances which travelled along the foothills of Himalayas up to Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh.
Moreover, moderate to strong south westerly and southerly winds from a Bay of Bengal continued to feed moisture over Northeast India. Occasional formation of cyclonic circulations over Assam and Bangladesh also helped in enhancement of Pre monsoon activities.
Rain and thundershower activities are expected to continue with varied intensity over Northeast India during remaining days of April. Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will witness isolated to scanty rainfall.
