Northeast India to witness another spell of rain

Northeast India received a good spell of rain between May 15 and May 18. But since last three days, the region has been experiencing a somewhat lull period in terms of weather activity. However, after 24 hours or so, rain in the region is expected to pick up gradually.

As predicted by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Northeast India received intense and evenly spread out rain last weekend. Rain brought down temperatures in many parts of the region. On May 18, Guwahati recorded 30.4°C as the day temperature, Tezpur 30°C, Lakhimpur 25.7°C, and Dibrugarh 29°C. But once the intensity and spread of rain reduced, maximum temperatures in the region rose again. On May 20, Guwahati recorded 36.6°C, Tezpur 34.8°C, Lakhimpur 35°C, and Dibrugarh 35°C. High level of humidity, combined with temperatures in mid-30s, led to uncomfortable conditions in the region.

But now, a cyclonic circulation over East India is giving favorable winds over Northeast India. In addition to this, the cyclonic circulation that earlier gave rain over the region, is currently in the process of reorganization. It is likely to shift over central parts of Bay of Bengal. These two systems are likely to cause widespread rain over Northeast India.

Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Meghalaya, and upper Assam after 24 hours. Overall, the spread of rain is likely to increase over the region. With the return of widespread rain, temperatures are expected to drop and comfortable conditions will prevail in the region. This activity will last for about three days. During this period, other parts of the country will not witness any substantial rainfall activity. Only dust storms and thunderstorms are expected in parts of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana.
