Northeast India to see a rainy week ahead

Northeast India has not had a very good Monsoon year so far with most parts of the region being rain deficient. In fact, Arunachal Pradesh along with Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura have remained rain deficient until now. However, there have been some good rains over the states of Assam and Meghalaya are in the threshold of normal rain category at -19 percent.

These regions have seen some rains during the Monsoon and not remained completely dry, but since the average is so high, thus, these regions have not been able to see positive Monsoon statistics.

At present, the axis of Monsoon trough has once again shifted to the foothills and is once again extending across North Bihar, Sub Himalayan West Bengal up to Nagaland and is expected to remain there for the next four to five days at least. Also, humid winds from Bay of Bengal will also feed moisture over Northeast India.

Thus, rain activities will be intense over Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Nagaland until August 26 or so. Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will also receive good showers during the same time frame but the rain intensity will be comparatively less over these areas as the Monsoon trough will be over the northern parts of Northeast India.

These rains will bring down the rain deficiency to some extent, but it will not be enough to cover the large deficiency. Moreover, the possibility of isolated waterlogging cannot be ruled out in some low lying areas of Assam.
