Northeast India remains rain deficient despite continuous rains

August 14, 2016 11:18 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Northeast India generally receives very heavy to heavy showers during the four-month-long Monsoon season. It is the rainiest region of the country, along with the West Coast. The normal Monsoon rainfall figures itself are quite high in this region.

This year, Northeast India has seen torrential rains. So much so that Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been flooded on several occasions. In fact, these two states are still recovering from the fury of incessant rains and flooding.

Nevertheless, the subdivision of Assam and Meghalaya is still rainfall deficient to the tune of 31%. Arunachal Pradesh has also received 7% less rains than normal. The subdivision of NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura) is also rainfall deficient by 30%, till August 13, 2016.

During last 24 hours, the northeastern states received widespread good rainfall.

Here’s a look at the rainfall figures in Northeast India during last 24 hours:

Monsoon rains will continue over Northeast India during next few days. As of now, Monsoon has taken a backseat in most parts of the country. But, Northeast India will continue to witness good showers during next 48 hours.

As and when the fresh low pressure area forms in the Bay of Bengal, it will divert the moisture laden winds from Northeast India and reduce rainfall over the region. Till that point of time, moderate Monsoon rains will continue over the northeastern states.
