Light to moderate rain and thundershowers have lashed the northeast region of India. Many parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya have recorded hefty sum of rainfall in last 24 hours. In fact, parts of Sikkim also witnessed light snowfall activity.
In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Anni recorded 49 mm of heavy rainfall, followed by Golaghat 32 mm, Pasighat and Cherrapunji 28 mm. Other areas to have observed good showers were Jorhat 18 mm, Lumding and Kohima 15 mm and Guwahati 14.5 mm, Dibrugarh 6.3 mm, North Lakhimpur 6 mm and Aizawl 5.1 mm.
The reason for these rain and thundershowers can be credited a cyclonic circulation over West Assam and an associated upper air trough in the westerlies. Another trough is also seen extending from Arunachal Pradesh to South coastal Odisha across West Assam, Meghalaya and Bangladesh.
With the combined effect of these systems, light to moderate rains with isolated heavy spells are expected to continue over the northeastern states for another two to three days. Also, thunder squalls cannot be ruled out at few places.
Currently, the day temperatures over hilly parts of these states are settling between 14 to 17°C, while plains are observing maximums near20°C.
With these ongoing showers, day maximums are expected to go down and will remain below normal for next few days.
