Northeast India gearing up for flooding rains

June 15, 2022 7:52 AM |

Northeast India has recorded some good rains in the last 24 hours. Moreover, many parts have seen moderate spells of rain. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Guwahati recorded 41 mm of rain, North Lakhimpur 28 mm, Dibrugarh 21 mm, Golaghat 12 mm, and Silchar 21 mm.

Monsoon current is advancing and is expected to reach more pockets of East India. In view of that, southwesterly streams are strengthening directly into the northeastern parts, which is what is causing these rainfall activities over Northeast India.

Heavy to very heavy rains are expected over Northeast India. Most intense rains are likely over Assam and Meghalaya. Here also, Lower Assam is more vulnerable as compared to Upper Assam. Parts of Goalpara, Dhubri, Barpeta, and even Guwahati and Dispur right up to the border of Sub Himalayan West Bengal may see heavy showers.

For Meghalaya, Garo Hills and Khasi Hills including Shillong and Cherrapunji will also have heavy to very heavy showers. Rains will begin tomorrow itself, but extremely heavy rains are expected around June 16.

These showers may result in flooding conditions, and overflowing of water bodies as well.
