Floods continue unabated in several villages of Northeast India and has so far claimed 25 lives. Though there has been marginal decrease in the rainfall over the region.
Moderate to heavy rain continued to drench several places in the region on Tuesday as well. Arunachal Pradesh and Assam remained the most affected states.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Monsoon trough is passing through Northeastern region which has resulted in torrential rainfall. However, relief is expected in next 48 hours as a fresh cyclonic circulation that is prevailing over North Bay of Bengal is in process of getting more organised. This will take away all the moisture and result in change in wind pattern, which will eventually lead to decrease in rainfall over Northeast India.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Jorhat in Assam recorded 38.2 mm of rainfall, Silchar 34.6 mm, North Lakhimpur 20.2 mm and Guwahati 11.2 mm. In Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar received 38.2 mm and Pasighat 27.8 mm.

Incessant Monsoon rains have led to flooding across hundreds of villages in Northeast India. At least 21 people have died as flood water submerged villages one after another. The exact scale of loss of life and property is not available yet. The water level of River Brahmaputra has risen dangerously.
Also, other rivers are flowing above the danger mark. Even river tributaries have contributed towards inundation of homes and markets. Some 800,000 people have left their homes so far. Around 50,000 people are currently sheltering in 168 relief camps across Assam.
During Southwest Monsoon, floods are common in this part of the country. But this year, so far, only one flood-like episode has been witnessed in the region. The condition is grim in upper Assam whereas lower Assam is comparatively less affected.
In the last 24 hours, good rains have been observed over various parts of the state. Gossaigaon recorded 96 mm of rain, Pasighat 75 mm, Cherrapunji 180 mm, Dibrugarh 13 mm, Lakhimpur 17 mm, Tezpur 21 mm, Guwahati 12 mm, and Imphal received 3 mm of rainfall.
Rainfall in the region is likely to continue for another 24 hours. Thereafter, a marginal reduction in the intensity of rain can be expected. But even with light to moderate rains continuing over the region, rivers will continue to pose serious problems for the locals. Thus, significant relief from floods can only be expected after a few days.
