North India Shivers As Maximums drop Way Below Normal

Most parts in North India have been observing dense fog for the last couple of days. The widespread fog cover is not allowing the day temperatures in these regions to rise. As a result, the maximums are recording below normal. The variation from the normal temperature is on the higher side in most parts, with few cities experiencing variations of up to 10°C.

For example, the maximum temperature of Chandigarh on 21st December was 9°C which is 10°C below normal. Similarly, the maximum temperature in Lucknow on 21st December was 13.7°C, which is again 10°C below the normal average.

Let's take a look at the maximum temperatures and the variation from normal in the last couple of days in some of the cities of North India:

Meanwhile, the chilly weather combined with thick cover of fog has hugely affected the region causing delay in air, road, and rail traffic. Some 50 trains have been delayed while around three dozen flights have also been stalled. Also, at least 8 people have died due to extreme winter conditions.

Even though temperatures have shown slight improvement with the variation taking a marginal beating in some parts, the variation from normal continues to be on the higher side. Cold day conditions continue to prevail in most parts with no immediate big relief expected. As of now, the day temperatures are expected to stay below normal. Hence, the bitter cold combined with reduced visibility will continue to affect the region.
