Hills of North India observe heavy precipitation; landslide claims three lives

As reiterated by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, widespread heavy precipitation has been observed in the hills of North India. In last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Sunday Banihal recorded a whopping 102.3 mm of precipitation. Batote also witnessed 79.8 mm of rain, while Bhaderwa and Kuernag observed 68.8 mm and 44 mm of precipitation, respectively. Katra, which is the starting point for pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi Shrine also recorded 53.5 mm of precipitation. Other places in the state to observe some heavy precipitation are: Jammu 38.7 mm, Srinagar 37 mm, Kupwara 27 mm, Pahalgam 25 mm and Gulmarg 24 mm.

The spell of rain and snow was not only confined to Jammu and Kashmir but Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand also recorded some very good precipitation. Looking at the data available with Skymet, Almora in Uttarakhand recorded 14 mm of rain. The state capital Nainital also witnessed 9.5 mm of precipitation, while Mukteshwar and Pithoragarh observed 17 mm and 13.6 mm of precipitation respectively.

In Himachal Pradesh, Dharamsala recorded 42.6 mm of rainfall in last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Sunday. Una and Manali also witnessed 23.8 mm and 11 mm of rain respectively. Shimla also observed light rain of 5.4 mm.

Meanwhile, looking at the weather models at Skymet there is no relief expected in the conditions for another 48 hours in the hills of North India. Also there is threat of avalanche and landslide in the higher reaches. According to some media reports, three people lost their lives in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir due to landslides on Sunday. Among the dead was a 17-year-old girl.
