North India anticipates chilly and foggy New Year

Indian weather has been reckoned for always being notorious and it is pretty clear this year. Ever since winters have marked its arrival in the country, people residing in northern parts of the nation have failed to experience the winter chills.

December is just about to end and till now, winters have remained mild over Delhi and its surrounding regions except for the initial days of the month when the northern part of the country witnessed some foggy mornings. From last many days, East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have been witnessing persistent fog.

Though, the other areas of the Indo-Gangetic Plains including the states of West Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and parts of North Madhya Pradesh still remained fog-free. However, isolated areas of these states yet managed to witness shallow to moderate fog.

But, on December 29, a trough has formed from Delhi to east Bihar across Uttar Pradesh leading to an easterly flow of winds. This has further increased humidity level over all these areas. Moreover, the dry and cold northwesterly are replaced by warm and humid easterly and south easterlies.

In the wake of this, minimum temperature over the northern states of the country has increased by 2-3 degrees. The intensity of fog has also increased over the northern plains including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, North Rajasthan and North Madhya Pradesh.

As of now, the easterly flow of winds is also expected to continue till January 2. This would lead to the formation of dense to very dense fog at few pockets and moderate fog at few places over the entire Indo-Gangetic Plains.

The diurnal variation between the minimum and maximum temperature is also expected to remain less thus paving way for cold day conditions at many parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and North Rajasthan.

The winter chill which was till now unfelt in the northern parts of the country will be felt for another 3-4 days.
