Chhattisgarh has a north-south orientation and shares its boundaries with six other states. Due to its geographical location, the Southwest Monsoon is active in Chhattisgarh for most of the time. The state observes four months of good Monsoon rains along with early arrival and late withdrawal of the Monsoon.
This Monsoon season good rains were observed across the country including Chhattisgarh in the month of June due to which the rainfall amounts were surplus by 41% in the state.
July was however, not good in terms of rainfall for Chhattisgarh. This can be understood from the fact that the surplus of 41% in June dropped to become 9% deficient in July. Though +/- 19% is considered to be normal in meteorological terms.
August was also not good for the country but Chhattisgarh was spared the brunt to a large extent. Due to good rains in the last one week the rainfall amount in August settled at a normal of -15% (+/- 19% considered normal). And good rains in the first two days of September have helped Chhattisgarh in sustaining this figure.
For instance Jagdalpur in a span of 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Tuesday has recorded 77 mm of rain, which takes the total rainfall figure to 100 mm in just two days. This is almost half the monthly average of 200 mm for the city.
Most of the rain this time has been observed in the central and southern parts of the state.
