Normal rainfall in the country during end of pre-Monsoon season

RainfallAs Monsoon approached closer, rainfall activity increased in Northeast and Peninsular India. Some good pre-Monsoon showers have also been observed in parts of North India due to which the cumulative rainfall in the country has been normal for the week from May 28 to June 3.

The best performing sub-divisions have been in Peninsular India. For instance, Rayalaseema has received 42.6 mm of rain against the weekly average of 15.3 mm, which is surplus by 178%. South Interior Karnataka with 53.2 mm of rain against the average rainfall of 23 mm is also surplus. Rainfall in North Interior Karnataka has comparatively been weak but, the rainfall amounts are still surplus by 68%.

In Northeast India – another region to observe good rain – the sub-division of Assam and Meghalaya has received a whopping 160.7 mm of rain against the weekly average of 97.3 mm. With 123.2 mm of rain against 84.5 mm, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal has also been surplus.

Pre-Monsoon rains in the last 3-4 days had been good in North and Northwest India due to which a surplus was observed in some sub-divisions. West Rajasthan was the pocket where rain was more than double the weekly average of 4.2 mm.

During this period (May 28 to June 3) East and Central India were the regions where rainfall was deficient by a big margin. For example, east Uttar Pradesh received only 0.2 mm of rain against 6.1 mm, while Bihar observed 6.3 mm of rain against 14.6 mm.

In Central India, the sub-divisions of west Madhya Pradesh and east Madhya Pradesh were deficient by 88% and 42%, respectively. Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha were also deficient by 18% and 10%, respectively.

Out of the 36 sub-divisions in the country excess rainfall has been observed in 8 sub-divisions. While 7 sub-divisions have experienced normal rain this week.
