Southwest Monsoon withdraws from the state of Uttarakhand during mid September. Rains take a dip and reduce to quite an extent. However, the region still observes some rainfall and snow activity in November and December.
This year, the scenario has been quite different and there has been a large deficiency in terms of rainfall activity. So much so that the region has observed a rainfall deficiency of 76 percent between October and December. In fact, against 89.6 mm of rainfall, the state has been only able to record 21.3 mm during this period.
In fact, the region has also been snow deficient with snowfall activity remaining completely on the backseat. Along with the month of December, January has also observed dry weather conditions and snow has remained absent.
Not only this, for another one week or so, snowfall activity will not be observed and the region will see dry weather conditions only.

This is the time of the year when snowfall activity is at its peak. However, due to the lack of snow, the International Skiing Race, that was to be held between Jan 15 and 21 in Auli, Joshimath. Now, the Federation of International Skiing (FIS) has rescheduled the competition to be held from February 16.
Korea will be holding the Winter Olympics from February 9. Thus, skiers who had enrolled for the Auli skiing race will now try their luck in Korea and then may be back to Uttarakhand for the competition.
