Dry and hot weather conditions have been prevailing in Maharashtra from last many days. In fact, in the last 48 hours, temperatures had risen steadily in parts of Madhya Maharashtra. During the last 24-48 hours, Malegaon and Bhira have also experienced heatwave conditions.
The mercury settled seven notches above its normal average in Malegaon yesterday. Though the maximums have decreased marginally in last 24 hours over Madhya Maharashtra but many places over Konkan and Goa are still experiencing temperatures 5-7 degrees above normal. During the last 24 hours, Akola witnessed the maximums at 37.5°C, Aurangabad 35.5°C, Budhana 35.5°C, Chandrapur 37°C, Sholapur 37.7°C, and Jalgaon 37.2°C.
The reason for this extremely dry and warm weather over Maharashtra can be associated with the absence of any significant weather system prevailing over the region. Moreover, dry easterly and northeasterly winds are also prevailing over the region. As these winds are warm and moist in nature, they caused the mercury to rise significantly over most parts of the state.
The significant rise in temperatures did not even spare coastal regions of Maharashtra that were also reeling under dry and hot weather conditions. Mumbai, that witnessed a 38.9°C on February 19, saw the mercury hitting 38.3°C again on Tuesday. Ratnagiri too witnessed the maximum settling at 38°C.
In other words, the hot and uneasy conditions prevailing over coastal Maharashtra is also adding to the discomfort level across the state.
Many areas in the Vidarbha region are also reeling under above normal temperature by 3-4 degrees. Moreover, as per Skymet Weather, the similar weather pattern is likely to remain over the state. Temperatures of Vidarbha and Marathwada will remain significantly above normal.
