No respite from heavy Monsoon rains in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has been receiving heavy to very heavy Monsoon rains since last one week, particularly between June 7 to June 9. All thanks to the low-pressure area that had formed over Bay of Bengal and moved towards Myanmar and intensifying into a depression.

Besides this, a cyclonic circulation was seen over the northeastern states of India. In wake of this, heavy to extremely heavy rains continued over the country. During the last 24 hours also, heavy rains were witnessed over many parts of the country.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Sylhet recorded extremely heavy rainfall activity to the tune of 134.4 mm, followed by Comilla 119.8 mm, Khepupara 119.0 mm, Teknaf 117 mm, Cox S Bazar 97.6 mm, Sitakundu 70. 4mm, Dhaka 58.4 mm, Srimangal 35.8 mm, and Hatia 33 mm.

Meanwhile, light rains were observed over Farodpur that saw 15.2 mm of rain, followed by Satkhira 11 mm, Patuakhali 10 mm, Madaripur 5.8 mm, and Barisal 5 mm.

Reportedly, many coastal districts such as Cox S Bazar are flooded, causing a lot of destruction over the Rohingya refugees camps.

Further also, we do not expect any respite from heavy rains that are likely to continue for another 24 hours. Thereafter, rain intensity will start decreasing from southern districts of the country but moderate shower with few heavy spells will still continue over the northern districts for another two to three days.
