No relief from rains, floods in Kashmir; avalanche alert for 48 hours

kashmir floodsFlood situation in Jammu and Kashmir remains grim, as weathermen predict more rains in offing. Incessant rains have been lashing most parts of the valley, pushing Jhelum river to flow well above the danger mark.

On Thursday, personnel of Indian Army along with National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) had rescued several people who were struck in flooded areas. They are still on standby as not much improvement is seen in the weather conditions.

According to Skymet Weather, light to moderate rains and thundershowers are likely to continue for another 24 hours, In fact, higher reaches of the region will also record more spells of snow.

The only relief is the fact that the intensity of the weather activity will not be as intense as it was during the last 24 hours.

“An active Western Disturbance is still affecting Jammu and Kashmir but the system will soon move away from the region by Saturday. Till then, rains of varying intensity will continue that will keep the situation tense and any improvement in flood situation is not expected,” said Mahesh Palawat, Chief Meteorologist, Skymet Weather.

Weathermen have also asked the disaster management and local authorities on alert as threat of landslide and avalanche is still looming large over Kashmir during the next 24 hours.

By the evening of April 8, weather will start clearing up and situation is likely to improve gradually. Rains will then take a back seat and clear sky conditions will make a comeback by Sunday.

Another Western Disturbance is likely to approach Jammu and Kashmir by April 14.
