No relief from intense heat in Maharashtra, conserve soil moisture

Heatwave conditions are continuing over most parts of Vidarbha. Meanwhile, most of the other parts of the state such as Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra are experiencing hot weather conditions.

The temperatures across most parts of Vidarbha are witnessing temperatures above or near 45 degrees Celsius.

On Tuesday, Chandrapur recorded the maximum temperatures at 45.9ºC, Wardha 45ºC, Brahmapuri 44.7ºC, Nagpur 44.5ºC, Akola 44.5ºC, Parbhani 44.5ºC, Nanded 44.5ºC, and Yeotmal recorded the daytime high at 44ºC.

On the other hand, the weather of Konkan is warm, but the maximum temperatures are still near normal or marginally above normal. The maximums in the region are settling in the range of 32-33 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Madhya Maharashtra has been witnessing the maximums settling in upper 30’s.

On Tuesday, Mumbai recorded the maximum at 33.3ºC, Ratnagiri 33.6ºC, Harnai 32.5ºC, Dahanu 34.2ºC, Nashik 37.6ºC, and Kolhapur recorded the maximum at 38.6ºC.

As of now, we do not expect any weather activity over the region and hence, heatwave conditions in Vidarbha and hot weather conditions in the other divisions would continue at least for the next 48 hours.

However, due to a trough passing from Chhattisgarh to Tamil Nadu through Telangana, isolated thunderstorm activities may occur over parts of Vidarbha in the next 24 hours. Though these pre-Monsoon activities would not be able to dip the temperatures much, this would just give a short-term relief. Isolated parts may even witness some light spells.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

In the wake of heatwave conditions in Vidarbha, farmers are advised to apply light and frequent irrigation. Farmers should also undertake mulching with straw/polythene to conserve soil moisture.

To avoid flower drop in chilly, farmers should give irrigation to the crop. For control of fruit, rot and die back spray fungicide. In South Konkan, continue harvesting of rice.

Farmers should undertake nursery bed preparation for rice in harvested fields. Farmers should also continue harvesting of matured groundnut and should dry harvested pods in sunshine for 3 to 4 days.
