Mumbai saw several shades of weather in the month of January. From extreme cold nights to extremely hot days, Mumbaikars have braved it all.
The entertainment capital saw two spells of chilly winters wherein temperatures dropped as low as 11.9°C. The first spell was between January 10-13, while the second episode was between January 18-20.
According to Skymet Weather, being a coastal area, Mumbai is not used to see such low night temperatures and thus weather was quite cold according to the city standards.
This occasional fall in minimums was due to continuous flow of northeasterly cold winds which were travelling via Madhya Pradesh where night temperatures were settling in single digits, well below the normal average.
Meanwhile, days have been very warm in absence of any rains during the month. The monthly average rainfall for the city is 0.6 mm but the weather absolutely dry during this January.
Last week of January saw mercury rising tremendously. Maximum temperatures remained in the range of 33°C to 37°C from January 23.
As per weathermen, temperatures of Mumbai are governed by the direction of winds, wherein the northeasterly inland winds tend to bring down the temperatures, while westerly or northwesterly winds that are warm and humid tend to increase the mercury.
At present, northwesterly winds are blowing across the region. Hence, we do not expect any significant relief in coming days from the rising mercury. Maximums temperatures will remain in lower to mid 30s, while minimum temperatures will be between 18°C-20°C.
Clear sky and bright sunshine will make the afternoon warm and uncomfortable. Also, being a coastal station, humidity levels are also high. This in combination of high temperatures and high humidity will increase the discomfort.
