On the first day of the Monsoon season in the country, Kerala saw excess rainfall by 96% wherein it recorded 24.5 mm of rain against the normal of 12.5 mm.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Quilandy recorded 153 mm of rain, Vadakara 180 mm, Kozhikode 144.7 mm, Enamackel 132.6 mm, Aluva 63 mm, and Vaikom 120 mm. While, Honavar in Karnataka received 134.2 mm of rain and Mangalore 48.8 mm.
According to Skymet Weather, the cyclonic circulation marked over Lakshadweep Island and adjoining Kerala coast is responsible for the intensification of rain across the region.
Though Kerala and Coastal Karnataka continues with heavy rain, the system has also given scattered light to moderate rain over South Interior Karnataka including Bangalore.
These rains hold great relevance for the arrival of the Monsoon over Peninsular India. Particularly the following 14 stations, whose rainfall decides the onset of Monsoon over Indian mainland. gas the rainfall criteria for Monsoon is only met when 2.5 mm of rain is recorded for two consecutive days in over 60 percent of these stations.
With an increase in Monsoon surge and humid winds also reaching up to adjoining Interior Tamil Nadu, which will lead to good rain over the region after June 4.
