No destruction from Cyclone Jawad but record breaking rain for Paradip

December 8, 2021 9:12 PM |

Cyclone Jawad, the first storm of the Northeast Monsoon season did not make a landfall anywhere and dissipated in the sea itself. While the Cyclone did not cause any massive destruction as such, since it continued to maintain a safe distance from the Coast, there were some pretty heavy rains in some parts of Odisha.

The most rains were seen over Paradip in Odisha that recorded a whopping 201 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours time. The average rains for Paradip in the month of December stand at a mere 16 mm, and the region recorded around 15 times of that in just a span of 24 hours.

These rains happen to be the highest 24 hours rains ever for Paradip, equalling the record of December 1973. Talking about the monthly rains, Paradip saw heavy showers for three consecutive days taking the total December rains so far to 328 mm, which is the highest ever for December.

These rains surpassed the previous record of 261 mm witnessed in the year 1973 itself. For the coming days, no rains are expected for the state of Odisha for at least quite some time.
