Nights to get colder in North India, day temperatures to rise

January 5, 2015 7:18 PM |

HIMACHAL SNOWIn the last couple of days Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in North India have observed some very good snow and rain due to a Western Disturbance, which is expected to sustain for the next two days. But the system has once again failed to give snow in the lower parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Popular places like Srinagar are yet to witness any snow, which is highly unusual.

Major weather activities this time have been confined to Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand which is why we are not observing any major changes in the weather in the plains of North India at the moment. The weather in Punjab and Haryana are usually affected by the meteorological conditions in Jammu and Kashmir.

Nevertheless, rain and snow in Himachal and Uttarakhand has impacted the weather pattern in the plains for the last two weeks in terms of drop in maximum temperatures. Most places in the plains have been observing cold day conditions with maximum settling around 15°Con an average.

Minimums have risen to double digits in most places. For example Delhi on January 3 recorded 13. 8°C as the morning minimum, which is 7 degrees above normal. On January 4 the minimum settled at 12°C, 5 degrees above normal. And on January 5 it settled at 7.8°C, which is marginally above normal.

The maximum however settled below normal. The day temperature recorded in the city on January 2 was 16°C, which is 5 degrees below normal, while on January 3 the maximum had recorded 16.8°C, 4 degrees below the average.

Similarly, Chandigarh in Punjab recorded 15.7°C as the maximum on January 3, which is 5 degrees above normal. On January 4 the day temperature settled at 13°C, a departure of 8 degrees.

However, with the rain belt shifting from Madhya Pradesh to west Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Punjab we can expect the day temperatures to rise by about 4 degrees. The minimums will however observe a drop due to clear skies. Strong surface winds coupled with low temperatures are going to increase the chill during night.
