New Year packs snowy surprise for Hills of North India

January 1, 2017 3:00 PM | Skymet Weather Team

There were many who visited the hills of North India on December 25 and enjoyed a White Christmas, but then New Year celebrations in the hill stations were a dry affair. But in next couple of days the hills of North India are expected to witness another spell of rain and snow.

A fresh Western Disturbance is seen over North Pakistan and adjoining area which is expected to affect West Himalayas on January 3. So as on January 3 & 4 we expect fairly widespread rain and snow to occur over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. If the weather pattern doesn’t change in next few days then this may be the second good spell over the hills after Christmas Eve.

This fresh Western Disturbance seems to be much stronger than the previous Western Disturbances. And with a small interval on January another Western Disturbance will continue to give rain and snow over all the three hilly states till January 7.

And after this good snowfall, icy cold northerly winds will bring freezing temperatures to the Northern plains where the extremely chilly winters can be experienced. There will be a significant drop in minimum temperatures.

As of New Year’s Day light rain or isolated snowfall is possible over higher reaches of Uttarakhand in the wake of a moving away Western Disturbance.

Tourists who missed the snowfall on Christmas can again enjoy snowfall this time around.
