Deadly rains, ferocious thunderstorms kill 35 in Nepal

Sunday night was a devastating one for many parts of Nepal, as heavy rains, severe lightning and strong winds have claimed at least 35 lives until now leaving 500 and more injured.

The southern region of Nepal has been hit by severe Pre Monsoon activities after temperatures rose causing rainfall in these areas. The terrain, being a foothill region, contributes a lot to the damage that these showers and winds have caused over the region. The area becomes vulnerable to these activities due to its geographical location as well resulting in intense weather activities.

At least 100 army personnel have been deployed in the areas that have been affected, rescue operations are on way. Homes have been destroyed with felling of trees reported in various areas. Ferocious winds sent debris flying into the air causing the deaths of people sleeping in their huts.

The most amount of damage has been reported in the Bara district, which is very close to the Indian border. It had become difficult for rescue operations to be carried out at night as the victims continued to struggle in the dark.

Both the number of injured and deceased is likely to rise as debris were being removed in the daylight. Highways, and the access to these areas were hindered by felled trees and electric poles. While these activities are common during this time, devastation of this scale is not as common.

Weathermen advise to exercise caution now as well since heavy showers may be seen in the next 24 hours as well. There may be some respite tomorrow.
