Nepal Quake Relief: Incessant rain continues to hinder rescue operations

April 29, 2015 4:53 PM |

Rain in NepalIt has been raining all over Nepal and more rain is expected over the region in coming days. The western parts of the country started receiving rain yesterday. As the weather system moved across Nepal, parts of central and eastern Nepal also witnessed good rainfall activity.

In the last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Tuesday, Pokhara recorded 15 mm rainfall, Dang 18 mm, Bhairahawa 44 mm, Simra 37 mm and Kathmandu recorded 3 mm rain. Rescue operations in the earthquake hit country are getting hampered due to incessant rain. So far, more than 5000 have been confirmed dead and at least 10,000 have been reported injured after the massive quake which struck the region last Saturday. Rescue teams are now trying to reach remote areas where the extent of damage remains unknown.

Besides rain, thick and heavy clouding is also slowing down rescue operations in Nepal. It becomes extremely difficult to carry out air rescue and relief operations under overcast conditions. Rain continues to pose a challenge for quake aid teams. Moreover, thick and low clouds in the region are further restricting air rescue operations.

Although the weather in Nepal was marginally better today, overcast conditions with possibility of rain continue to hover above the region. The country is expected to observe such weather for few more days. There will be a small window of relief during morning and forenoon hours when the weather partly clears up. But as the day goes on, the weather is expected to turn grey again.
