Nellore in AP witnesses whopping 131 mm of rain

Rain in South IndiaAs Northeast Monsoon remains active, Nellore in Andhra Pradesh received 131 mm of rainfall on Tuesday, with 81 mm of rain recorded in just three hours. Heavy showers, which went on continuously for several hours inundated streets of the city.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rain has become widespread in South India. In addition to coastal Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the interiors of the states have also started receiving rain. South Interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh too are observing rain.

In a span of 24 hours, several areas in Tamil Nadu such as Palayankottai recorded 16 mm of rain, Coonoor 9.4 mm, Cuddalore 8 mm, Chennai 4 mm, Coimbatore 2 mm and Kodaikanal 1mm of rain.

In Kerala, Alappuzha recorded 25 mm of rain, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi  and Punalur recorded 4 mm of rain each. Kozhikode and Kottayam also received 1 mm and 0.4 mm of rain, respectively. While, Honnavar in coastal Karnataka also received 1mm of rain.

In the wake of recent downpour, maximum temperatures have taken a dip and are now settling in low thirties. While, minimum temperatures have shown a rising trend and are recording in mid twenties.

According to Skymet, weather conditions are favourable for Northeast Monsoon to remain active over southern peninsular region till the weekend. This spell of rain is expected to extend to parts of North Interior Karnataka as well during the next couple of days.

The monsoon season is reaching its fag end as we enter mid December. The Northeast Monsoon, usually remains active till the first fortnight of December and starts withdrawing itself and rainfall reduces drastically over southern peninsular region. Extreme southern parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu will still receive some rain. However, by third week onwards rain becomes minimal.
