Vidarbha, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra are the landlocked sub-divisions of Maharashtra. Currently, the northern half of Madhya Maharashtra seems to be the coldest. Nasik City at 9.4°C and Jalgaon at 8.0°C are the coldest amongst all. These are colder than the hill station of Mahabaleshwar in the Konkan region of Western Ghats. There are other stations like Pune (NDA), Buldhana, Ahmednagar and Wardha recording temperatures well below the normal by 3°-4°C.
The twin cities of Pune and Nasik generally take turns to be among the coldest in Maharashtra. Both the cities had earlier dipped to under 10°C in the last week of November 2024. Both, have large diurnal variations in the winter months of December and January. Nasik had a minimum temperature of 21°C and Pune 22.5°C on 04th and 05th Dec and now plunged to single digit within 4-5 days. This pattern is likely to continue.
The winter anticyclone is quite marked over parts of Rajasthan. After the recent spell of snowfall across the northern mountains, this feature has been pumping cold sweep from the north, right down to Madhya Maharashtra and North Gujarat. However, this chilly flow is likely to get arrested, very soon. There is a western disturbance approaching Afghanistan and North Pakistan between the 14th and 16th of December. Though the system will not impact the plains of North India, yet, the anticyclone will get displaced eastward. The cool and frosty winds will get replaced by westerly and southwesterly winds, more humid and warm in nature. The temperatures are likely to rise between 14th and 16th Dec across most parts of the state and more so the northern half of Madhya Maharashtra. The minimum temperatures are expected to rise by 4°-5°C. After the clearance over the mountains, the mercury is likely to dip once again from 17th Dec onwards.
