On June 5, World Environment Day is celebrated across the globe with different themes. Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi will initiate a nation wide plantation drive on World Environment Day.
Moreover, he will plant the first sapling at his official residence 7 Race Course Road and inaugurate the tree plantation campaign to create awareness among the citizens of the country for our environment.
This year’s World Environment Day theme is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care". The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) encourages nations across the world to do something positive on World Environment Day.
Prakash Javadekar, Minister of State of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with cricketer Virat Kohli and wrestler Sushil Kumar will plant saplings at Paryavaran Bhawan. During the evening hours, Javadekar with Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Ajinkya Rahane will plant saplings at the Joggers Park in Mumbai. On June 6, the Indian cricket team before leaving for the Bnagladesh tour will take part in a plantation campaign.
For achieving the goal of a greener country, a pilot project on urban forestry will be launched in Pune on June 6. Seventy acres of forest land is being used to make a memorial garden. About 4,000 trees will be planted. People can pay Rs. 2,000 per tree and name the tree after their dear ones.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has also piloted a bill in the Parliament for releasing around ₹ 35,000 crore under Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) to all the states, for making India greener and protecting the environment.
