Nainital, Dharamsala and Kokrajhar record three digit rainfall

During Monsoon, the active phase of weather is longer compared to the dry spell. Currently we are in the inactive phase where rainfall is confined to certain places or pockets only. In the last two days there has been very less rain across the country.

This is because there is no major weather system in the Bay of Bengal. And the Monsoon surge is being affected by typhoon Soudelor which has made landfall in Taiwan.

The Monsoon trough which also controls the weather activity to a large extent tends to shift closer to the foothills during the weak phase of Monsoon. In such situation the rainfall activity gets confined to the hills and foothills of North India and Northeast India.

When the monsoon trough shifts closer to the foothills, heavy rainfall becomes a common feature in the region. Some good rainfall is also observed at a few places along the Western Ghats.

For instance, Mahabaleshwar has received 111.6 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Friday. Dharamsala and Sundar Nagar in Himachal Pradesh have recorded 110 and 145 mm of rain, respectively. Nainital in Uttarakhand and Kokrajhar in Assam have also recorded 100.5 mm and 118 mm of rain, respectively during the same period.

According to weathermen at Skymet, good amounts of rain will be observed in the region, particularly the foothills of north India for next 24 to 48 hours.
