Southwest Monsoon was vigorous particularly over Assam this Monsoon season. It poured very heavy three digit rains which led to floods in almost all areas of the state.

In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rains have occurred over parts of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. In fact, in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday, Cherrapunji received 72.4 mm, Dibrugarh 48.9 mm and Pasighat 56.8 mm, while, Itanagar, Dhubri, and Shillong also received light rains.

However, if we see the rain statistics of northeastern states, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura are rain surplus whereas Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya are rain deficit. Now we expect that rain intensity is likely to increase over Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura in the next three to four days. Meanwhile other Northern states such as Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh will continue with subdued rains.

Though there may be some patchy showers of high intensity over the states overall, rains will be on a lower side. The reason for these good rains over Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura is the flow of humid easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal.

These easterly humid winds are increasing moisture leading to good rains. The decrease in rain intensity over Assam has improved the flood situation and now also we do not expect heavy rains over Assam, therefore, there will much-needed relief over floods prone areas of Assam.
