Nagaland Floods: Rains to become heavy in some parts

Northeast India has performed poorly this Monsoon season and out of the seven states, Mizoram has been the state with the best performance while Manipur has seen the least Monsoon showers this time. Nagaland has seen a gradual improvement wherein the deficiency in June was at a whopping -25 percent, July saw the deficiency drop to -20 percent while as on August 30, the state of Nagaland is rain deficient by -10 percent.

The state of Nagaland has been seeing floods since the last two three days. In fact, 3000 families in 400 villages have been displaced. There has not been extremely heavy rainfall over the state. In fact, the flood situation is attributed to the mountainous terrain and rivers flowing over the region.

The last one week has seen some rainfall. For the city of Kohima, normal rainfall in August is 382.4 mm and so far, 320.4 mm has already been recorded. Out of these, more than 50 % of rainfall has been observed in the last one week to the tune of 173 mm.

There is a large network of rivers flowing from east to west and west to east in Nagaland. The major three rivers are Dhansiri, Diku, and Doyamg which flow westward and drain into Brahmaputra.

The state has 11 districts and rainfall varies from region to region. Out of these, most amount of rainfall is observed at Wokha, Zunheboto, Longleng, Kiphire and Mokokchung. Least rainfall is observed in Mon and Dimapur.

This season, rains have varied from being large deficient to large excess.

The month of September is more prone to rainfall as monsoon withdraws from northern parts of the country but have stayed in Northeast India. Therefore, rainfall occur more over northeastern parts including Nagaland which Lies over the northern part of North East India. In fact, during the next few days, some parts may see some heavy rainfall activity
