Severe Cyclone Maha is currently lying over the East Central Arabian Sea. At 8:30 hours today, it was located near Latitude 14.8°N and Longitude 71°E, about 450 northwest of Amini Divi, 460 north/northwest of Mangaluru and 310 south/southwest of Goa.
The weather models are indicating that the Cyclone would move in a northwest direction for the next few hours and later re-curve in west/northwest direction. It will gradually intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm and is likely to maintain this status for another two to three days.
The system is traveling in the favourable weather conditions i.e. in a warm sea surface with the temperatures around 28 degree Celcius along with a low vertical wind shear between 5 and 10 knots. It is likely to travel in such conditions for the next two to three days.
During the next 24 to 48 hours, the system would give light to moderate rain with isolated heavy spells in North Coastal Karnataka, South Konkan, and Goa as well as South Madhya Maharashtra. While scattered rains are likely in North Konkan and Gujarat. Sea conditions are also likely to remain rough in Konkan and Gujarat Coast for the next 48 hours.
After 48 to 72 hours, Maha would come under much cooler sea surface with temperatures ranging from 26 to 27 degree Celcius. These conditions would restrict the further intensification of the Cyclone.
By November 5, the system is expected to re-curve in a northeast direction towards the Gujarat Coast.
