MUST WATCH: Chennai floods build-up in 12 seconds, via NASA

December 11, 2015 10:30 AM |

Chennai floods have battered the capital city of Tamil Nadu and its adjoining areas. Normal life came to a standstill when roads were submerged in water and all modes of transport were severely affected.

Tamil Nadu was pounded by the heaviest rainfall in over a century where the capital city, Chennai received more than 300 mm in 24 hours. US space agency NASA used six days of satellite data to estimate rainfall totals.

Rainfall data was taken from the GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) mission core satellite, which is jointly managed by NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. NASA’s IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM) estimated rainfall from November 28 to December 4.

The video shows flooding rainfall, which broke several records and caused widespread damage and destruction in Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu. Chennai floods have hit the state capital hard and the city will take its own time to make a comeback and start afresh.
