Mumbai witnesses hot and humid weather

May 26, 2015 3:44 PM |

Weather in MumbaiMumbaikars have been reeling under hot and humid weather conditions for the last few days. High maximum temperature and even higher levels of humidity are making days highly uncomfortable in Mumbai.

In the absence of any weather activity, the day temperature in the city has been settling in mid 30s, sometimes even reaching up to higher 30s. Nights are also warmer, with minimum temperatures in high 20s.

On Monday, Mumbai recorded 35.2°C as the maximum temperature, two degrees above the monthly average of 33.3°C. Minimum temperature was also two degrees above normal at 29°C.

However, it's not the high day temperatures alone that are responsible for the discomfort. Even though, they are settling 1-2 degrees above normal, it is the increased humidity in past few days, which has led to sultry weather.

Slight relief can be felt in evenings and nights as strong sea breeze during the later half of day makes inclement weather, bearable.

According to Skymet, there isn’t any respite for next four to six days as no significant weather activity is in offing.

Mumbai has not witnessed any weather activity in this month, so far, which is typical of the weather during May. Out of the last eight years, the city has recorded traces of rain in six of them. While the remaining two years have recorded less than 1 mm of rain.

The city generally witnesses thunderstorm and thundershowers activity before the onset of the Southwest Monsoon. The official date of onset of Monsoon over Mumbai is June 10, however this year, initial monsoon current is slow. Accordingly, we can expect Monsoon to arrive over the city one week later than expected, i.e., around June 17.
