Mumbai is unlikely to score its normal rainfall in August 2022. The month of July had far exceeded its normal of 840 mm with a repeated downpour of more than 100mm rainfall in 24hr. The month of August did start on a promising note. The 1st half rained well amassing 410mm rainfall but nearly silent thereafter. Unlike its reputation, Mumbai has recorded mere 5mm rainfall in the last 5 days. Total rainfall between 01st and 29thAug has reached 551mm and unlikely to score the monthly target of 585.2mm.
In the absence of any off shore features, entire West Coast from Konkan to Kerala performed poorly and Mumbai topped the list during 2nd half of the month. The off shore north-south trough, main driver of rains, was barely seen. Month concludes with similar conditions over the next 2 days. Nothing more than few isolated, patchy and short period rain patches over the city expected.
City observatory at Santa Cruz had recorded depleted August showers last year also. Aug 2021 had barely measured total of 337.8mm. The variability is so large that the year prior to that, the financial capital was deluged with 1240.1mm of rainfall in Aug 2020. There could be a little pick up on the opening day of September, but typical Mumbai rains will be missing for the next 10days.
